Mobility Scooters aren't just for Christmas - Reasons someone might buy one this January

The number of mobility scooter sales has been steadily rising year on year since 2016. This could be in part due to the increase in the number of different types of mobility scooters that are available on the market.

Sales of mobility scooters seem to drop around the December period each year, but just as quickly as they drop, they jump right back up again in the January period each year.

I won’t bore you with the technical research and data, but we are going to explore some of the reasons why people might be buying mobility scooters so soon after Christmas.

The Holidays

During the Christmas holidays, many people are spending time with their families. They get together, exchange presents, eat food, play games, and laugh together. I’m sure you know how Christmas works.

During the festivities and get-togethers, some family members might notice that mum, or nan, or grandad might be struggling a little more to move and get around than they once did. They might have been struggling for a little while and now, due to the cold weather, it’s gotten even harder.

Family members may decide to persuade their relative that they need a little extra help nowadays and that a mobility aid is the way to get it.

A mobility scooter is not just for Christmas…

It may be an overused phrase, but it’s true. A mobility scooter is not just for Christmas. It’s an investment in your future that will serve you year-round, and there are many reasons to get one.

  • You can be independent – A mobility scooter can help you find your lost freedom. They allow you to get out of the house and go on trips out, whether with your family or by yourself. They give you the freedom to move that maybe age or illness has taken away from you. If you regularly back out of plans with your friends and family due to lack of mobility, then maybe they are trying to give you the gift of freedom and independence this Christmas.
  • You can do most of your favourite activities – With the benefit of better mobility, comes the ability to get out and do things that you enjoy doing. Obviously, that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to run a marathon, but it does mean you can enjoy going out shopping, to the zoo, or on walks with your family (while you ride along side them). The most important thing is that you can do things that make you happy and improve your mental health. So you can still enjoy those Christmas day walks with your family – just remember to wrap up warm!
  • You get to stay social – With the right support from a mobility scooter, you can stay social and see the outside world with your friends and family. You might even just want to pop in to see your friend. Having a mobility scooter means you can regain your confidence to make spontaneous, spur-of-the-moment plans. You no longer have to be reliant on a family member or carer to be present to help you get around.
  • You can be more fit – Mobility scooters encourage fitness. Again, as stated above, this doesn’t mean you’ll be running marathons. But by going out more regularly you’ll be more active generally. Even just getting up and out of the door, is more active than staying indoors. Any physical activity, even small, will be beneficial to your health and well-being. Your family are likely trying to look out for your health and mental well-being by trying to help you be more active and independent.
  • Travelling and holidays – Depending on the type of mobility scooter you get, you may even be able to start travelling again. Portable lightweight fold up mobility scooters  are great for this type of activity and many are equipped with flight friendly batteries so you can even take it abroad with you. If you love to see the world, or just want to take a nice staycation with your loved ones, this will benefit you and give you the freedom to do so.
  • Safety – One of the most important reasons to consider buying a mobility scooter is safety. If you are unsteady on your feet, or have issues with mobility, bad weather can pose an problem. Snow and ice specifically in the winter months can make it so hazardous that many people avoid going out at all costs. With a mobility scooter, you are much more stable and safer when you’re out and about if you need to pick up a last-minute item from the shops, or want to get to a family Christmas gathering.
